Research Tools
Indexes and Search Engines-The
difference between indexes and search engines is that an index is a historical database of
information about web pages that have been indexed and categorized, so searching an index
only will only bring up web pages that are in that index; it doesn't actually search the
Internet. A search engine on the other hand actually attempts to go out and perform
keyword searches of actual websites on the Internet. TIP: If you're unsure of how much and
what kind of information there is on your topic on the Internet, try browsing or searching
an index such as Findlaw or Yahoo! first. If you have a relatively narrow search topic,
try a multi-engine search tool such as Dogpile or Inference Find.
